Meet Variety Kids

ThomasKhunsha

Khunsha is 16 years old and has a disease known as morquio disease, that has restricted her physical development and growth in her legs.  Khunsha is only able to walk up to 30 feet with a forearm walker once daily and uses an electric wheelchair for mobility.  To transport Khunsha to school, doctor appointments, and social outings, an adaptive van was needed.  Variety was able to provide $5,000 towards the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van for Khunsha. 

Alexander
Alexander is 11 years old and is diagnosed with speech apraxia, cerebral palsy and developmental delay.  Alex has trouble communicating his thoughts and inevitably gets very angry and frustrated resulting in behavioral problems.  While trialing equipment at The Children’s Institute, Alex’s speech therapist noted that he was successfully using a Dynavox V communication device.  Variety was able to provide $5,000 towards the purchase of a Dynavox V communication device for Alex at a total cost of $7,790.. 
Zion Ashley
Ashley is 14 years old and is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Ashley is quadriplegic and needs helps for all aspects of daily living.  She uses a power wheelchair for mobility, but unfortunately, Ashley cannot adjust her body position in the chair by herself.  As a result, pressure sores were developing on her backside, which were causing Ashley extreme discomfort.  At The Children’s Institute, Ashley tried a wheelchair sliding backrest that allowed her to have some passive stretching to relieve the pressure she experiences throughout the day as well as maximizing her mobility.  Variety was able to purchase a Permobil C500 sliding backrest for Ashley’s wheelchair at a cost of $2,062. 
Alexander Lainey
Lainey is a spunky 13 year old teen.  Unlike her friends, Lainey is unable to walk because of significant pain and hip degeneration.  Lainey also suffers from developmental delays and decreased motor skills.  Because Lainey uses a wheelchair for mobility, her family was in need of building a house ramp for easier access into and out of their home.  Variety was able to construct a wheelchair house ramp for Lainey at a cost of $4,250..
Johnathan Thomas
Thomas is ten years old and is diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  As a result of his medical condition, Thomas has very poor body and head control.  Thomas currently uses a manual wheelchair for mobility that is very cumbersome transport.  Variety was able to provide $5,000 towards the cost of an accessible van for Thomas (total cost $29,410).
